With big, Kawaii eyes and smile, this ghost is sure to be a hit for RAOCKS and trick-or-treaters – add a ring to make cute keychains for your market stall. ABBREVIATIONS
- sc – single crochet (Yarn Under / Yarn Over)
- dc – double crochet
- inc – increase – (2x single crochets in the same stitch)
- dec – invisible decrease – (insert the hook into the FLO of the next 2x stitches, yo, pull through 2x loop, yo pull through the rest of the loops on the hook)
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- blo – back loop only
- pc – popcorn – work 4 double crochet stitches in the same stitch, remove the hook, insert the hook into the first double crochet and pull the loop of the working yarn through
- fasten off – cut the yarn and pull through
- Rd – Round
- (#) – total number of stitches at the end of the round
- * * – repeat the stitches inside the asterisks
- [ ] – complete the stitches inside the brackets in the same stitch
The Pattern
Using 3.5mm hook and X-stitch (Yarn Under, Yarn Over) for single crochet stitches only
Working in continuous spirals and using a stitch marker
Repeat instructions between the * *
Rd 1: In White, 6 sc in a magic circle (6)
Rd 2: Inc x6, Pull the circle tight and weave in the tail (12)
Rd 3: *sc, inc* x6 (18)
Rd 4: *2 sc, inc* x6 (24)
Rd 5 – 11: sc in each st around (24) – 7 Rounds
Rd 12: 3 sc, PC, ch, 6 sc, PC, ch, 13 sc (24)
Rd 13 – 14: sc in each st around (crochet into the ch for the PC) (24) – 2 Rounds
Ensure that the piece is the right side out
Attach safety eyes between Rounds 7 and 8, 4 stitches apart – line up evenly with the Popcorn stitches
Do not use plastic eyes for children under 3 years old; embroider the eyes for safety
With a scrap of Black yarn, embroider the mouth over Rd 9
Rd 15: BLO sc in each st around (24)
Rd 16: *sc, dec* x8 (16)
Rd 17: dec x8 (8)
Fasten off leaving a long tail
Stuff the body firmly with polyester toy filling
Tip: Use a chopstick or pencil to push the filling into the opening
Using the yarn tail and a tapestry needle, weave in and out of the front loops of the remaining stitches
Pull tight to close the opening
Insert the needle inside the middle of the bottom and out the side of the ghost’s body – pull tight to create a dimple on the bottom that will help the piece stand up
Rd 18: Attach White yarn to the left-over front loops from Rd 14 at the back while holding upside it down,
Ch 2, dc in each front loop around, sl st to the 1st dc or use the Invisible Fasten Off
Fasten off and weave in end on the wrong side
