1. Finish Up with the Old Colour

Right before you complete the last stitch in the old colour (when you have two loops left on the hook), create a loop in the new colour and place it over the end of the hook.

Finish that stitch with the new colour to seamlessly transition by pulling the new colour under the two loops of the old colour.

2. Crochet with the New Colour

Continue to crochet the amigurumi in the new colour, keeping your tension consistent.

Some patterns will use a few stitches of a contrasting colour, while others will use several rounds (or even alternate between colours to create stripes).

3. Carrying the Colour Inside

If you’re going to use the old colour again, you don’t need to snip it off. You can carry the colours inside the work (where it won’t be seen).

This is called Floating. Just make sure to leave slack on your floats and don’t pull them too tight or they’ll distort the shape of your piece.

Floating creates a cleaner finish than carrying yarn under your stitches.

4. Clean up the Ends

Once you’re done with the colour switching, neatly weave in the yarn ends on the inside of your amigurumi. This keeps everything secure.

You can also double-tie the ends together, but be sure not to pull too tight and distort the amigurumi’s shape.
