The abbreviated instructions are followed by a breakdown in italics making it easier to understand what you need to crochet in each row / round. Please read before you start the pattern:

You can use any DK or Worsted Weight yarn. If you use a larger hook, keep a smaller hook on hand to pull through the beads (i.e. you’ll need to switch hooks as you work; crochet with the larger hook and pull the bead through the yarn with the smaller hook).

The pattern is a simple granny square with 2 chains in each corner (where we’ll add the beads) and no chains between the other clusters. Keep in mind that you need 4 corners each round to make a square.

We have used stacked single crochets instead of a chain 2 at the beginning of each round.

To add the beads, chain 2 (remove your hook from the loop – put your hook through the bead to grab the working loop of the yarn – pull the bead through and over the chain 2).

MATERIALS

  • Worsted weight yarn (Marvel 8 Ply)
    – Grey
  • 3.5mm crochet hook
  • Keyring (Optional)
  • Pony Beads – 9mm (12 beads)
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle

ABBREVIATIONS

  • cluster – 3 double crochet stitches in one space
  • stacked sc –  stacked single crochet – single crochet, single crochet in the bar on the side of the first single crochet
  • mc – magic circle
  • ch – chain
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • fasten off – cut the yarn and pull through
  • st – stitch
  • Rd – round
  • (#) – total number of stitches at the end of the round
  • * * – repeat the stitches inside the asterisks
  • [ ] – complete the stitches inside the brackets in the same stitch

The Pattern

Rd 1: Using your tapestry needle, thread 12 pony beads onto the yarn

In a MC, stacked sc, 2 dc, ch 2 (add bead), *cluster, ch 2 (add bead)* repeat 3x total, sl st to the stacked sc

(4 Clusters)

 

Rd 2: Stacked sc in the space to the right of the first bead, 2 dc in the same space, *Ch 2 (add bead), cluster to the left of the bead,
cluster to the right of the next bead* repeat 3 times total, Ch 2 (add bead), cluster to the left of the bead, sl st to the stacked sc

(8 Clusters)

 

Rd 3: Stacked sc in the space between the clusters from the previous round, 2 dc in the same space, *Cluster to the right of the next bead, ch 2 (add bead), cluster to the left of the bead, cluster in between the clusters from the previous round* repeat 3 times total, Cluster to the right of the bead, ch 2 (add bead), cluster to the left of the bead, sl st to the stacked sc

Wrist Loop:

DO NOT TURN

Sl st to the next dc (middle dc of the cluster), Ch 25, Sl st to the next dc

 

Fasten off and weave in the tail

Pull the tail of the magic circle tight and weave in

 

Alternatively:

Add a keychain to the middle of one of the double crochet clusters
