Hocus Pocus Pumpkin Amigurumi Crochet Pattern

Leif the Nisse Gnome Mini Amigurumi Pattern

Get ready for a little Halloween fun with the Hocus Pocus Pumpkin pattern! The pumpkins are created by working in striped rows and need only a small amount of yarn. The shaping is minimal, with only a few stitches required to create the squishy shape. If you want more of a spooky twist to your decorations, add some safety eyes and a face for the witch version (included in the pattern).

One of the best things about this pattern is that it only uses a small amount of yarn, so get out your scraps. Just remember that the hook size will depend on your yarn thickness and tension.

Using Aran yarn / DK yarn and a 3.5mm hook, our Hocus Pocus Pumpkin is approximately 8cm x 6.5cm. The size will vary depending on yarn, hook, and tension.

Our patterns are written a little differently with beginner and neurodivergent crafters in mind. The abbreviated instructions are followed by a breakdown in italics, making it easier to understand what you need to crochet in each row / round. If you’ve had trouble reading crochet patterns in the past, we hope that you’ll give ours a try!

The Pattern

Please read the information below before starting the pattern:

The witch version is in the PDF only.

There are two versions of the Hocus Pocus Pumpkin – the Striped Sage version and the Witch. Start by choosing which pumpkin you wish to make (the patterns are written separately), and grab your supplies.

The shell (body) of both pumpkins is made by working in rows alternating between the Aran and DK weight yarns. Change colour in the last stitch of the previous row and carry the yarn up the side instead of cutting.

To make the DK weight stripes even tighter, we have used the Yarn Under / Yarn Over method of single crochet. If you prefer, you can size down your hook on the DK rows and use normal single crochet.

There is no shaping required to make the indents of each segment – the DK yarn stripes pull the sides in because they’re made up of smaller and tighter stitches.

You can use any weight yarn you like, but make sure you match your hook with your yarn and tension. For this example, we have used an Aran weight and DK yarn with a 3.5mm hook. Finished pumpkins are approximately 8cm wide x 6.5cm high (not including the stem of hat).

Tip: It can be helpful to place a stitch marker in the 1st and last stitch when working in rows to ensure that you aren’t increasing or decreasing accidentally.

Holding Row 1 and 36 together, slip stitch through both sides using the front loops

Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing (approx. 40 cm)

Turn right side out

Thread the yarn tail onto a tapestry needle and weave in and out of the top of the rows

Continue weaving the yarn evenly in and out all the way around – when finished, pull tight to cinch up the top

Put your hand inside the pumpkin and sew from side to side a few times through the stitches to neatly close any holes

Do not cut this yarn – we will use it to shape the pumpkin later

Cut a piece of Sage yarn approx. 40cm

Thread the yarn tail onto a tapestry needle and weave in and out of the top of the rows on the bottom of the pumpkin

Firmly stuff with polyester filling

When you’re done, pull the yarn tail tight to cinch up the bottom – sew from side to side a few times through the stitches to neatly close any holes – hide the ends inside the pumpkin and cut

Shaping:

Re-thread the tail from the top of the pumpkin

Push the tapestry needle directly through the middle of the top and out through the middle of the bottom – pull tight

Repeat the above step 2 or 3 more times, pulling tight each time, to create the indented pumpkin shape – hide the end inside the pumpkin and cut
