Please read before you start the pattern:
The Mushroom Granny Square is made in 4 parts:
1. Circle (Green)
2. Turn the circle into a square (Grey)
3. Half double crochet border (White)
4. Toadstool Applique´ (Red and White)
The spots are added to the Toadstool with little cross stitches, and then it’s sewn to the middle of the granny square.
You can either complete each granny square one by one, or via batches by making all the green circles, then turning them all into squares, and finally adding the borders. This can make it a bit easier to make all your squares uniform.
We have substituted the chain and first double crochet of each round with a stacked single crochet (you can also use a chain 2 or 3 depending on your preference).
You can use any yarn weight, but make sure to match your hooks appropriately depending on the drape you want in the square. The Toadstool should be made with a smaller hook to reduce the gaps between stitches. Keep in mind that your tension, yarn, and hook will affect the size of the finished square as well as the amount of yarn used.
Tip: It can be helpful to place a stitch marker in the chain 1 corners of the granny square to ensure that you have 4 each round
Gauge:
3 rounds of green circle = approx. 9cm
Each square is approx. 14cm unblocked

Assembly
Using a strand of White yarn,
With the Right side of the Toadstool Cap facing, cross stitch five or six X’s for the white spots of the toadstool
They don’t have to be the same on each square – it will make them look more natural if they’re slightly different
Weave in the ends on the back of the piece
With Right sides of the Cap and Stipe (Stem) facing,
Place the Cap over the first row of the Stipe and stitch together neatly using the tail from the starting chain of the Cap using a Mattress Stitch
Sew or use fabric glue to attach the Toadstool to the middle of the green circle of the Square (we have tacked the Toadstool on with a little bit of fabric glue to keep it centred and then sewed it on)
If you don’t want to see the stitching on the back of the Square, be careful only catch the top layer of the stitches on the Square (there is a video on our TikTok account)
Weave in any ends between the Toadstool and Square
The next step is up to you –
Connect your squares together to use as a:
• Blanket
• Bag
• Cardigan
• Etc, etc, etc
Get creative! There are many, many different ways to join your squares and lots of good YouTube tutorials. We prefer to use a simple single crochet join in a contrasting colour.
