Please read before you start the pattern:

One of the best things about this pattern is that it only uses a small amount of yarn, so get out your scraps.

Just remember that the hook size will depend on your yarn thickness and tension.

Using Chenille yarn and a 4mm hook, our Mini Chicken is approximately 5cm wide. The size will vary depending on yarn, hook, and tension.

MATERIALS

  • Bulky Chenille yarn (Bella Baby Nippers)
    – Camel

  • Scraps of Aran weight yarn
    – Red
    – Orange

  • 4.0mm crochet hook or size needed for your yarn and tension

  • 8mm Kawaii Safety Eyes (not for children under the age of 3 years)

  • Stitch Marker

  • Scissors

  • Tapestry needle

  • Polyester Toy Filling

  • Keychain with Lobster Clasp (Optional)

ABBREVIATIONS

  • sc – single crochet
  • inc – increase (2x single crochets in the same stitch)
  • dec – invisible decrease (insert the hook into the FLO of the next 2x stitches, yo, pull through 2x loop, yo pull through the rest of the loops on the hook)
  • ch – chain
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • blo – back loop only
  • fasten off – cut the yarn and pull through
  • Rd – Round
  • (#) – total number of stitches at the end of the round
  • * * – repeat the stitches inside the asterisks
  • [ ] – complete the stitches inside the brackets in the same stitch

The Pattern

Using 4mm hook and X-stitch (Yarn Under, Yarn Over)

Working in continuous spirals and using a stitch marker

 

Rd 1: In Chenille yarn, 6 sc in a magic circle (Alternatively: ch 2, 6 sc in the 1st ch)  (6)

Rd 2: Inc x6, Pull the circle tight and sew in the tail (12)

Rd 3: Inc x12  (24)

Rd 4: In BLO, sc in each stitch around  (24)

Rd 5 – 9: sc in each st around  (24) 

Rd 10: *2 sc, dec* x6  (18)

 

Hold the piece together flat and work through both sides to close the top of the chicken:

2 hdc in the same st to make the tail

 

Attach safety eyes between Rounds 8 and 9, 4 stitches apart and evenly on either side of the head

Do not use plastic eyes for children under 3 years old; embroider the eyes for safety

With a scrap of Orange yarn, embroider the beak over 2 stitches between the eyes, repeat the stitch 4 times

 

Slip stitch in the next 5 stitches working through both sides to continue closing the body

Fasten off leaving a tail to weave in

Stuff the body with polyester toy filling

Tip: Use a chopstick or pencil to push the filling into the opening

 

In the next stitch (working through both sides again), attach Red yarn (or the colour you want to use for the comb):

Ch 1, [hdc, dc, hdc], sl st, [hdc, dc, hdc, sl st]

Fasten off leaving a tail of yarn to weave in

 

Weave in all ends

Attach the keyring behind the comb if using
